Adoption
Adoption resources help youth and child welfare professionals
Adopted at age nine, Adam Robe is now a child welfare professional and author who delivers trainings and keynote speeches to others. (Need to line up an engaging speaker for your next event? See what Adam has to offer!)
If you've been looking for quality adoption books for children, you can stop searching. The popular Robbie's Trail Through Adoption series is designed to help children adjust better to tough changes in life. An adult reads the story with the child and then both work through the activity book together; the adult uses the supplemental adult guide to help spark discussion, guide adult responses, etc.
This series offers two storylines - one for "closed" adoptions (where children will not have post-adoption birthparent contact) and one for "open" adoptions (where kids will see their birthparents periodically after the adoption).
Items in the series can be purchased individually or as a 3-book set:
- Either the Robbie's Trail Through Adoption story or the Robbie's Trail Through Open Adoption story
- An activity book, which covers control, grief and loss, feelings, communication and self-identity (activities now sold as a stand-alone book!)
- An adult guide with tips for helping children in out-of-home care; also includes instructions for facilitating the activities
You may also want to check out the Robbie Readers - "quick reads" that feature activities in the back of each book. Titles include: Wanting To Belong, Meeting My Casa and Moving To Another Foster Home.
The What Is Adoption? brochure is ordered by child welfare professionals to give to adoption-eligible children. This kid-friendly piece explains adoption and how the process generally works. It also addresses commonly asked questions and explains the roles of caseworkers, therapists, guardians ad litem and CASA volunteers. Download a free copy or order a set of 25.
